Why Brands Are Embracing Human Creativity

Designed by Poppy Jessica

As a graphic designer working across branding, visual identity, and marketing, I'm always interested in the trends that influence how businesses communicate with their audiences. One of the most exciting design trends emerging in 2026 is Imperfect by Design.

This approach is changing the way brands think about graphic design, creative marketing, and visual storytelling. In an era where AI-generated content is becoming increasingly common, businesses are looking for ways to create authentic, memorable brand experiences that feel genuinely human.

What Is Imperfect by Design?

Imperfect by Design is a graphic design and branding trend that embraces handcrafted elements, organic layouts, textured visuals, and creative imperfections. Rather than aiming for flawless digital polish, designers intentionally incorporate human touches that make brands feel more relatable and distinctive.

Common characteristics include:

  • Handwritten typography

  • Collage-style compositions

  • Paper and grain textures

  • Experimental layouts

  • Hand-drawn illustrations

  • Authentic photography

  • Mixed-media design techniques

The result is a visual identity that feels creative, personal, and unique.

Why Brands Are Embracing Human-Centred Design

Modern marketing is saturated with content. As AI tools make it easier to create graphics, businesses face a new challenge: standing out.

This is where strategic graphic design becomes essential.

Brands are increasingly investing in creative direction and brand design that communicates authenticity. Consumers, particularly younger audiences, are drawn to businesses that feel genuine rather than overly corporate.

By incorporating Imperfect by Design principles into branding and marketing campaigns, companies can create stronger emotional connections with their audiences.

A Lesson From Hermés

While many brands are embracing Imperfect by Design as a response to an increasingly automated creative landscape, Hermès serves as a reminder that authenticity and craftsmanship are not new ideas. The brand's visual identity has long celebrated hand-drawn illustration, artistic expression, and the value of the maker's hand.

This philosophy was recently demonstrated through Hermès' 2026 "Venture Beyond" digital campaign, created in collaboration with illustrator Linda Merad. Rather than relying on highly polished digital imagery, the luxury house transformed its website using a series of hand-drawn illustrations inspired by traditional lithography techniques, creating a more immersive and human-centred digital experience. The project reinforced the brand's longstanding commitment to artistry, storytelling, and craftsmanship in both physical and digital spaces.

What feels like a trend today has been a core part of the Hermès brand philosophy for generations. Rather than embracing imperfection for its own sake, Hermès demonstrates how human creativity can be expressed through refinement, storytelling, and attention to detail. Its approach highlights an important distinction: authenticity isn't always about visible roughness; it can also be about preserving the human touch within a carefully crafted brand experience.

The Impact on Branding and Marketing

For marketers and designers, this trend represents more than a visual style. It reflects a broader shift in how brands build trust.

Effective branding today requires:

  • Strong visual identity systems

  • Consistent brand messaging

  • Authentic storytelling

  • Human-centred design

  • Creative marketing strategies

Imperfect by Design supports all of these goals by helping brands develop a recognisable personality that differentiates them from competitors.

Where the Trend Is Appearing

We're seeing Imperfect by Design used across:

  • Brand identity design

  • Packaging design

  • Social media marketing

  • Website design

  • Editorial design

  • Creative advertising campaigns

  • Digital marketing content

It is particularly popular among lifestyle brands, creative businesses, independent retailers, and startups looking to establish a distinctive market presence.

My Perspective as a Designer

As someone passionate about graphic design, branding, and marketing, I believe the most successful creative work balances authenticity with strategy.

The best examples of Imperfect by Design aren't messy or unstructured. They are carefully considered visual systems that use texture, personality, and creativity to strengthen a brand message.

When used effectively, this approach creates work that is memorable, engaging, and aligned with modern consumer expectations.

Looking Ahead

As design and marketing continue to evolve, authenticity may remain a key differentiator. While AI will undoubtedly play an important role in creative workflows, human creativity, strategic thinking, and strong brand design will continue to drive meaningful connections.

Imperfect by Design is more than a trend. It represents a growing demand for branding and marketing that feels real, purposeful, and human.
